Is there still a Sawyer Road in Mhow Cantt? We used to live at 24 Sawyer road. I tried to find it on Google maps but the streets are not named. It would be wonderful, if you could tag it.
Thanks! Chris

Hi Chris... I remember a Sawyer Road. But to the best of my knowledge it is has been renamed. We used to live on Dennis Road and it is now known as Shivaji Marg. It would be interesting to locate the present Sawyer Road. I will tag it if I find it.

Hi Dev,
Thanks - I've asked a friend to make inquiries too through the fauji network. Will let you know if I find out anything more. Will have to quiz my parents too to see if they a remember Dennis Rd.
I'm enjoying your blog. I was born in Mhow so it has a special place in my heart. Chris

Hi Chris... I am fairly sure that I know a Sawyer Road... only that one suffers from information overload... for instance Middlesex Road is now Vikram Path, Montieth Road is Bhayaji Road, Gillespie Road hasn't yet been renamed (how did it escape?)... I am glad that a Mhow born is enjoying my blog... Do also click on the links to the right of the screen when you view this blog. You can then see the Mhow related articles and videos that I have posted elsewhere... regards, Dev

Hi Dev - acc to my mother, Sawyer Rd connects Generals Rd and Middlesex Rd. I remember that when we turned left from Sawyer Rd onto Generals Rd, it went downhill past the commanding officers house to a nallah (where we used to fish) and my Mother says that the Bombay highway was beyond that. Does this make any sense at all?

It does make a lot of sense. This is a small stretch of road. And I cross it a few times every day. There is a small football ground there now and the same compound used to have a bungalow till the early eighties.

I remember our house being a least one of 3 on Sawyer rd... sad to think it may be gone. Once you confirm it, will you please tag it? Thanks Dev!

No bungalows left on the stretch that you have told me about. If you lived in a bungalow then it may well have been pre-nineties. I will definitely tag it asap.

I haven't checked Google maps yet for the tag but thanks all the same, Dev. And yes we lived there back in the late 60's! My mom says the bungalows were rented by the army from Parsi families.
BTW thanks for the piece on Ambedkar - I did not know he was born in Mhow or the army connection.

Ah, late sixties. We were also here at that time. And if I remember there were at least two bungalows on the small stretch of road connecting Middlesex Road and Generals' Road. One of these was dilapidated when we came back again in '79. The other one was gone by the mid-eighties. I will tag this road on google map asap.

Glad you liked the post on Ambedkar. Mhow as his birthplace was confirmed sometime in the late seventies. It became like a pilgrimage center for Mahars and other members of the Dalit communities since the nineties.

Do click on some of the links you see on the main page of this blog. Plenty of Mhow stuff there too. Including the link to the wikipedia page on Mhow most of which has been written by me.

Do the Sowanis/Swanis still live just behind Dennis Road-probably middlesex road?

Dev said...

Hi Suchita, the Sowanis still live there. Colonel Sowani is no more. He passed away on 01 May 2010.
